We Do Metal Finishing Depending on Your Requirement

Metal finishing is a broad term that describes how we treat the exterior of a finished metallic object for a specific aesthetic look or protection against abrasion or oxidation. The term includes applying paint, sandblasting and polishing. Still, it commonly refers to a chemical process that deposits a thin layer of another material onto the surface of the metallic object through an electro-chemical process.

Our Full Metal Finishing Service

We offer clients a comprehensive choice of possible finishing for their latest project or the restoration of existing metallic objects, including:
  • Electroplating. This process is where the ions of suitable metals, such as zinc, chromium and copper, are chemically applied to the surface of another object, referred to as the substrate. Commonly, this substrate is also made of metal, but we can also electroplate other materials with care. The purpose is mainly to protect the substrate material from corrosive or abrasive agents.
  • Rejuvenation. A considerable advantage of electroplating is that just as it is chemically applied, we can remove it chemically. It means that plated fittings on cars or boats can be cleaned and replated to a new factory finish, as long as it is done before the substrate has rusted.

Types of Metal Plating Offered

We do several popular forms of metal plating objects at our workshop in Boronia. We apply chrome, zinc and nickel plating in our large tanks, which can accommodate items up to 2.1 metres in length, while we do brass, copper, nickel and champagne plating in smaller tanks.
  • Zinc plating. We apply zinc for protection against corrosion of indoor items, and it's relatively inexpensive to apply. A significant drawback is that zinc plating is not very abrasion resistant and offers little protection in a coastal environment. However, the option of adding colour to the zinc creates a visual appeal beyond the pure shiny metal, with black, blue and yellow being our popular options.
  • Chrome plating. Chrome plating is the best option if resistance to abrasion and a hard-wearing finish is required, along with corrosion protection. Popular for the trim on vehicles and boats, it can be polished and buffed to a high shine or with a brushed finish, if preferred. It offers better substrate protection than zinc plating and is usable for outdoor items, including in marine environments. The cost is higher but definitely worth it.
  • Copper and brass plating. Copper plating also offers corrosion resistance, but its primary use is for the higher electrical conductivity of copper. It is also a malleable metal, so a copper-plated object can be bent and twisted to a certain degree without cracking the plating layer, which is impossible with zinc, chromium and nickel plating. Copper and brass plating are available in a polished, brushed or antiqued finish.
We offer electroplating and metal finishing in Melbourne for engineering, shop-fitters, restoration enthusiasts and handymen. Size does not matter, as anything from bicycle frames to nuts and bolts can fit into our baths for a superior and long-lasting finish. We are also one of the few metal finishers who can plate aluminium objects.
