Beauty and Function With Chrome Electroplating

We all associate shiny chrome trim with vintage cars, but without realising it, chrome electroplating is also used for ordinary and mundane household and office objects such as furniture, handles and tapware. Basically, anything shiny and hard-wearing in your house is probably chrome plated to provide years of service.

Electroplating is happily not limited to large industrial productions anymore, but easily accessible to small engineering shops and handy home-owners through the services provided by us.

Facts About Chrome Plating

Electroplating was invented in 1805, but it was only in 1839 that the process was first commercially used for the copper electroplating of printing press plates. Since then, the process has become a staple of many industries.
  • Chrome plating is a form of electroplating and uses a direct electrical current to deposit chromium ions onto the surface of the object for plating. The object is placed inside what is called a bath containing the required chemicals. Temperature control is essential, as this can affect the final product.
  • We can chrome-plate most metals, but the most common base materials are steel, aluminium, copper and zinc alloys.

Benefits of Chrome Plate

Electroplating has found application in many industries, as the objective is protecting the base material against oxidation, or rusting, and fricative degradation. Two main applications of chrome plate have their own benefits and requirements:
  • Decorative chrome plating is applied to ordinary objects to make them aesthetically pleasing and to improve their durability in everyday use. This is common for kitchen components and office equipment. The average thickness of the plating is between 5 and 10 μm, with an emphasis on a shiny, elegant look.
  • Engineering chrome plating aims to improve the abrasion tolerance and wear resistance of otherwise “soft” metals. The emphasis is on hardness, resulting in a thicker coating of chrome instead of mere shininess.
  • A significant advantage of chrome plating is that the existing chrome can be chemically removed when it comes to repairing plated objects, the base material repaired, and then newly chrome plated. This advantage is ideal when restoring classic cars.
We offer a full service regarding chrome plating applications for both tradesmen and hobbyists. Our large tank can accommodate most objects, including car bumpers, but we will also do small items like pipe fittings and door handles.
