The History of Plating

This technology has been around since the 18th century but was only made famous in the 19th century due to the Industrial Revolution. This age-old practice is one for the history books, going through two world wars. The process has been changing throughout the years, and The Plating Place only uses the newest technological advances for all our plating services. Let's take a walk back in time to see how this all changed over the years.
  • Before Luigi Brunatelli invented electroplating, a British scientist, William Cruickshank, first discovered the art of experimenting with depositing metals of lead and copper onto a surface in 1801. He didn't receive the title of founder because the technique wasn't fully explored yet, and there were still some loose ends to tie up.
  • Then we come to 1805 when Brunatelli successfully invented electroplating. Instead of using lead and copper like Cruickshank, he used gold deposited through Volta piles onto metallic surfaces. Unfortunately, Brunatelli's work was never inducted into the French Academy of Sciences, preventing it from reaching other scientific communities.
  • Electroplating was neglected for decades until the 1830s when a British inventor, John Wright, rediscovered it. The Elkington cousins, George and Henry, bought the patent from Wright. They reached commercial success with their plating business, manufacturing various products, including the flatware which was on the RMS Titanic when it sank.
